Favorite hobbies?

Post by Kathi- on Sun Nov 04, 2012 3:39 pm

Do HSPs have certain hobbies that they gravitate to? Over the years, mine have included:

Drawing, calligraphy, playing the violin, horses, dogs, reading, needlework, hiking, travel, and photography. Maybe some others I can't remember right now!

Most of these are solitary pursuits, except for the violin, since I played in the school orchestra, and travel/hiking, though that is generally just with my husband. I think my interests have always matched my HSP status.

Boy Kathi you have a lot of hobbies! That is great! I have to say I don't really have a hobby right now which is a shame. I've been wanting to do something creative lately, like music, dance or art. I just have this real desire to well..create and express myself that way but the problem is finding the time to devote to it.

In the past I played the piano and flute, sang in a choir, was on a rowing team, creative writing, stamp, coin and postcard collecting and reading. These days I think if I could list them as "hobbies": yoga, meditation, hiking/walking, travel, photography, volunteering, cooking and foodie groups/events, wine appreciation/tasting lol. Wink For a while there I was involved in two dance groups, sacred dance and Bollywood dance, I miss that! There is something very freeing about dance.

After years of feeling inadequate for not having conventional hobbies like sewing, gardening, drawing, etc. I have decided that my exercise activities are hobbies. So my hobby is walking, swimming, and weight training. Also, I sometimes enjoy the occasional book. And I sometimes enjoy cooking. So, there you are - my hobbies. I will go hiking when I run into a group that enjoys it, which isn't often. And I very much enjoy driving around running errands - not shopping exactly, like clothes, etc. - but little things like Walmart, groceries, etc. And I enjoy visiting with friends over coffee.

Re: Favorite hobbies?

I have long felt that I don't have enough hobbies. :( I know that right now it's because I'm too busy, but even before I started studying, I'm not really sure what I enjoyed. Surfing the net was/is probably the biggest thing. But before I found the internet (lol), I enjoyed reading.

I guess travelling has always been a hobby of mine, but lately I find it harder to get motivated to actually plan a trip. And get packed up and ready to go. Once I'm there it's usually good, but even then sometimes I miss my home comforts. Maybe I'm growing out of it or something.

I have an idea of some hobbies, I'd LIKE to take up. Dancing, for one. And writing (used to do that as a kid and I'd like to rediscover it). Maybe even some other kind of art. I wouldn't mind doing something with animals, too. Maybe volunteering at the SPCA, if I can get past my difficulty with seeing them suffer/not wanted.

Oh, and yoga. I tried that a while back for the first time and really enjoyed it, but have not got around to going again. And I think learning meditation would be good for me. We had a group meditation at the HSP Gathering I went to in 2007 and it actually made me feel great. I'd like to try to recreate that...

Also, there is a Japan Society in my city that I joined a couple of years ago, but they didn't have my email address right and so I never got any information from them. I've finally reconnected with them and am hoping to get more involved in it as it has both Japanese and non-Japanese members and so conversations switch between Japanese and English, which is good for me. They organise an annual Cherry Blossom Festival here (I posted a pic of this year's one on Facebook), they're involved in the Japan Film Festival when it comes to town, and they have various gatherings for their members throughout the year (based around Japanese holidays/celebrations), usually at someone's house. I am going to a music soiree with them next Tuesday night. But I had to swap a shift with someone at work in order to do that. That's my main problem - my job makes it difficult to commit to anything on a regular basis, so it's easier not to get involved in stuff. :/

I hate this question because I have weird ones. This spring I was on an interview and someone asked me that and I was totally befuddled.

  • real estate: I have always wanted to use this as my primary way of making money so I like to look at listings and such. I would like to go to a meet up for real estate investors but I can't make it due to work. I recently enjoy going to open houses just to see what a certain place looks like.
  • travel: but I am getting sick of that. I often can't afford anymore than a few days and it always seems like such a hassle. Also travelling alone... not so fun
  • I admit it, I enjoy watching TV shows and then going to the internet to talk about them. Yes.. I think that should be a legitimate hobby.
  • Weight and Weight loss. I am absoutely insane about the latest information on the subject and also talking about it. Also Health.
  • When I was younger I enjoyed kitting, and rug hooking but now, I just don't have the time.

I would enjoy volunteering but I do have the issues Safari mentioned about getting too attached. However, I am considering joining a program for non socialized cats so I could try to socalize them. We will see. Every weekend it seems gets taken up with so much... I never even get my own errands done.

Oh, yes, wine tasting. How did I forget that one?? And also I am interested in home decorating and design.

Some of the things I listed above are things I used to do, but no longer do.

I am interested in learning yoga, but sort of fearful that my body isn't up to the task. I think there may be 'gentle yoga' sorts of classes around here which are perhaps less strenuous and more relaxation-based.

My all time favourite hobby is genealogy which I do a lot on the net. I also do lots of crafts, crochet, knitting, making jewellery, folk art and pretty much any craft, I have tried it.

I went to this nuno felting class last year which was interesting. It's attaching unspun wool to fabric with soapy water. Then you have to slap it down on to a hard surface and the wool works it way into the fabric. You can add pretty threads and things before the final slapping around.

I also like photography, mostly taking pictures of flowers and objects. [img][/img][img][/img]
These are some of the things I made for Ryan. The stuffed toy is Mr Squiggle. He used to be on TV over here years ago. He is from the moon and he comes down to earth in a rocket. He can draw a picture with his nose from a squiggle on a piece of paper. I think he turned 50 a few years ago. Smile Wattle will know him.

I also like making those patchwork rag rugs that are sewn up on the outside, then you fray the edges. There is one there under all the other stuff. It has little pirates and pirate ships on some of the patches.

I have a lot of hobbies, but like most of you, it's hard to engage in them because of work.

My time wasting hobbies are watching TV and movies, and playing video games, as well as surfing the internet. Eating and sleeping are also up there Smile

When I feel super motivated, I like to read, go on walks/hikes, do kickboxing / tae bo/step aerobics, and I play the piano. I used to play the clarinet when I was a teenager, but I gave it up. I like to compose music and am trying to get back into it.

I also really enjoy art and design, but have not done nearly as many projects as I would have liked, especially painting and illustrating. I did participate in an art showing at work, where I had a few pieces for sale.

I love to write and have a couple of blogs...one professional blog, and one blog that is dedicated to song parody ideas. I mis-hear a lot of lyrics, and so sometimes, those lyrics turn into song parodies. Weird Al is my hero.

Wow Sunflowerpixie, I love Mr. Squiggle! I can't believe you made that. Smile I'm sure he will be a treasured toy of your grandson's.
