Cooking a Turkey Empty Cooking a Turkey

Someone donated a turkey to Meals on Wheels yesterday. So I was wondering if anyone would know the best way to cook it because sometimes they can be a bit dry. Would it be best to cook it in a bag? And what about stuffing? I have been doing a bit of research online and it seems some are against cooking them with stuffing and cook it separately. I would like to serve up stuffing for the clients for their Christmas dinner.

Our new chef has never cooked a turkey before or had cooked even basic meat dishes before he started at MOW, so I think I will be cooking the bird. He specializes in hot currys.  Smile We are getting him trained though. He is from New Zealand but has been in Australia quite a long time.

I've never cooked a turkey...when my family does Thanksgiving and Christmas, we buy the turkey pre-cooked so all we do is warm it up. You'll want to put it in a large roasting pan, though, and it takes hours. The bigger the turkey, the longer it takes. Butterball has some general tips on their site so you can get an idea: How to Roast a Turkey

I've never been a big fan of the stuffing in the turkey...plus it can interfere with making sure the turkey is cooked all the way through. Just serve the stuffing on the side Very Happy.

I would also look up "brining"...apparently you can marinate or make a glaze for the turkey to help lock in the moisture and prevent dryness.

Thanks for that FKK. That's what I read about the stuffing too, about not getting cooked all the way through. So I will cook that separately.

I think I may have cooked a turkey once for family but can't remember what I did or how it turned out. I do like the oven bag idea and bought some today. It will be less messy too and we will probably have other meats cooking at the same time.

The turkey turned out great and so did the stuffing. I was really happy about that. I am back at work on Friday. Our numbers are down due to people being with their family over Christmas.

I'm having 2 weeks holiday from January 6th, so am looking forward to that.

Glad to hear it Very Happy. We nearly had to cook a turkey this year since the turkey we received to warm up had barely looked cooked (at least on the outside). Thankfully it was mostly cooked on the inside.

I would never even attempt something as scary as cooking a turkey, although I do, however, know how to make gravy. For dressing I would just make Stove Top. See how domestic I am.

Citygal, I just have to ask what is "Stove Top?"  Question

Cooking the turkey wasn't too bad. There doesn't seem to be any fat on a turkey. We kept the juices that it was cooked in and made gravy from that.
